A tip is an additional way that we show our gratitude to someone who has supplied us with a service; it's a modest bit of money. In addition, we often pay the listed price for the products and services that we obtain. However, the proprietors of the establishments and businesses we frequent typically receive this money rather than the staff member serving us.

Restaurants, cafes, bars, and other establishments associated with food are without a doubt the places where we leave the biggest tips. We give tips to bartenders who mix our alcoholic beverages, baristas who make our caffeinated coffee, and waitresses who take our orders and deliver food to our tables.

Hotels and hostels are other establishments whose staff members rely on our recommendations. Tipping hotel staff who carry our luggage to our room, clean our room before and after our stay, and deliver meals or a bottle of champagne up to our room are all possible

How to calculate tip?

For waiters and bartenders to appreciate the high caliber of service a customer receives, it is traditional to give a tip or gratuity. Tipping ranges from 15% to 20% of the total amount.

Multiply the entire check by 1 and add the decimal % tip you would like to leave in order to calculate the tip. To leave a 20% tip, multiply the amount by 0.20 to get 1.20. To find the total amount you would leave, including tip, multiply the bill by 1.20.

Choose the proportion of the tip.

To determine your rate, multiply the tip percentage in decimal form by 1.

Divide the total amount by your rate.

As an alternative, you might figure out the tip % and then include it in the total. The outcome will be the same as if you used the previously mentioned tip calculating procedure.

Choose the proportion of the tip.

Divide the total amount by the decimal tip %. The amount of gratuity you are leaving is this.

This sum should be added to the bill.

For larger parties, gratuities are increasingly included in the bill at restaurants and other venues. If you are allowed to leave a different tip amount, you can use the Tip Calculator to confirm the accuracy of those tip charges.

Example Tip Calculation

Imagine that after dinner with a friend, you received a $26.50 check. You would like to tip 18% because you received good service. Multiply the check amount by 0.18, the percentage expressed in decimal form.

4.77 are 26.50 * 0.18. So, $4.77 is your tip.

Multiplying the entire check by 1.18 will quickly provide the total cost of the meal plus tip: 26.50 * 1.18 = 31.27.

How to Calculate Tip in Your Head

If you calculate the tip amount mentally, you can come up with a reasonable estimate.

By shifting the decimal one position to the left, you can find 10% of your bill. 2.65 is 10% if 26.50 is 100%. The 20% portion of the cost is 2.65 + 2.65 = 5.30 since 20% is two times 10%.

Now you know that a tip of 10% to 20%, or $2.65 to $5.30, can be left for anything from poor to good. Take the 10% and add half of that, or an additional 5%, to get 15%, which is the midway point. 3.95 is 2.65 + around 1.30.

Currently, you have 15% is 3.95 - 10% plus half of 10% - by shifting the decimal position to the left. 10% is 2.65. 5.30 - 10% * 2 equals 20%.

There is enough information here to estimate the appropriate tip amount. A safe estimate would be 4.50 to 5.00 if you choose to go with roughly 18%.

You may wish to tip a different amount for a service than what the bill or spending total indicates. In this situation, you should figure out how much of a gratuity to leave the service provider as a token of your appreciation for the help you have received.
